Hi folks in the Schengen Visas community! I’m a software engineer from India thinking about heading to Portugal to look for tech jobs. I’ve heard there are some big changes coming to the job seeker visa program, especially around requirements for highly qualified workers and how to apply through consulates. My plan was to apply soon, but now I’m worried I might miss the window or not qualify. Can anyone break down what the recent updates are? Like, what’s changed in eligibility, duration, or the application process? Any tips for getting it right? Thanks!

Old Job Seeker Visa = discontinued (23 Oct 2025). All appointments under the old category were cancelled. It’s being replaced by a Skilled Job-Seeker Visa targeting specialised/“highly qualified” profiles.
-
New category status: on paper it exists, but consulates haven’t opened filings yet - they’re waiting for detailed regulations under the amended law.
-
Likely framework (from govt notes/press): still up to 120 days in Portugal to find a job (historically extendable +60 days), Portugal - only stay (not a roaming Schengen pass), and aimed at tech/specialised roles. Final eligibility list will come via ordinance.
What this means for you (Indian SW engineer)
-
If you planned to apply now: you’ll need to wait for the Skilled Job-Seeker Visa regulations and new appointment release. Keep an eye on MNE/AIMA + your consulate/VFS page.
-
Prep meanwhile: updated CV, degree proofs, experience letters, portfolio/GitHub, funds for ~4 months, and be ready to show you’re “highly qualified” (STEM degree, senior experience, niche skills, offers/interviews).
-
Plan B routes (open now):
-
Employer-sponsored work visa (job first → consular visa).
-
EU Blue Card if you secure a high-salary tech offer.
-
Entrepreneur/startup options (depends on your profile).

best of luck ![]()
