Social Media Privacy Nightmare: Why Did My F1 Visa Get Rejected?

Hey forum folks, I’m super frustrated right now. I applied for my F1 student visa through the US embassy in my home country, and they rejected it saying my social media accounts aren’t public. But I literally sent them the links to my Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter – they’re all set to public! I don’t get it. I’ve got my I-20, acceptance letter from the university, and everything else lined up. Is this a common issue? What can I do to fix this for a reapplication?

hey @rajpatel_code

Hey, F1 refusals like this are super frustrating, I feel you :downcast_face_with_sweat:

A few things from my side:

  • They won’t officially refuse “only” because socials are private - usually it’s part of a broader security/credibility check.

  • First, double-check your DS-160:

    • Are all usernames/handles spelled 100% correctly?

    • Did you list every platform you actively use?

  • For reapplication, I’d:

    • Keep all main accounts public for now.

    • Take screenshots showing profile → “Public” and bring them.

    • Make sure there’s nothing weird/political/contradictory on your profiles.

Also, treat it like a fresh F1 interview:

  • Strong story on why this university, how you’ll fund your studies, and why you’ll return after.

If you have the exact refusal wording, paste it next time - that usually tells me if it’s more security or 214(b) ties issue.
