Seeking real stories and experiences regarding short-stay Schengen visa applications

Hi everyone, I am currently compiling a blog series titled “Real Stories from Schengen Visa Applicants” to shed light on the process for those of us living outside Europe.

I feel that the official embassy checklists only tell half the story. I am looking to gather qualitative data on what actually happens on the ground.

If you have applied for a short-stay Schengen visa in the last five years, what was your experience? Did you face illogical document demands, surprising interview questions, or hurdles that weren’t mentioned on the official website? I am specifically interested in the “pain points” and the logistical reality of the process.

Realizing this is not about the general application form, but specifically for those applying from North Africa.

I am writing to document a negative experience regarding a visa refusal for a chess tournament in Germany.

I would like to share a recent administrative error regarding my visa for a landscape architecture symposium in France.

Realizing this is not about individual tourist visas, but for anyone managing sports teams or groups.

I’ve seen a lot of real-world feedback from applicants over the past few years, and a few common themes come up:

  • Appointment delays — getting a slot at VFS/TLS often took way longer than expected, especially in busy seasons.

  • Unexpected document requests — sometimes consulates asked for proofs that weren’t on the checklist (stronger ties, extra financial history, detailed travel plans).

  • Interview curveballs — not everyone gets interviewed, but when they do, questions can be oddly specific about travel purpose, accommodation, or return plans.

  • Processing time mismatches — “15 business days” often stretched to 3–5 weeks, or longer if additional docs were requested.

Overall, the official checklist is useful, but consistency, clarity, and early submission seem to make the biggest difference in avoiding stress.
Would love to read everyone else’s stories too!
