Hello everyone. I made the decision to move back to Cairo last year to focus on local historical preservation projects and formally surrendered my Green Card using Form I-407. I have a conference coming up in New York and need to apply for a B1/B2 visa. I am worried the consular officer might think I still have immigrant intent because of my history. Has anyone navigated this specific switch successfully? I want to make sure my documentation shows my life is firmly here in Egypt now.
This is a strategic position. Logic dictates that surrendering the card voluntarily is the strongest proof against immigrant intent. If you wanted to live there, you would not have signed the I-407. However, do not be complacent. Bring your contract, property deeds, and the stamped I-407 copy. Think ahead to what they might ask about your finances to demonstrate you have no reason to overstay.
